Project: 1,200 s.f. addition to existing Santa Barbara home, interior remodel including living room, kitchen and master bedroom and bath. Addition of guest room, entertainment room and home office.
Location: Santa Barbara Ca.
Description: Now in building department for review! The client asked us to provide a design that opened up the house to the incredible views out to the ocean and islands beyond while providing more room for their growing family. We responded by removing the existing walls between the living, kitchen and family room and inserting a new great room with a higher roof that rises to toward the view. The kitchen is remodeled and becomes a part of the living area. The new roof is carefully crafted to frame the views but also provide shade for the glass below. Oversized sliding glass doors open up onto the new deck providing true indoor/outdoor living. The deck will be a great space for entertaining with a gas fire pit and trellis shade structure over the dining table. Take a look at our Tips for Outdoor Living to see how we’ve incorporated this. We worked with the topography to create an addition below the deck housing the new office, guest room and entertaining space. These rooms all have access to the ocean view and garden via sliding glass doors. The design inclues many green and sustainable elements. Solar panels will be included on the roof and will generate the majority of the homes power, a solar water heater will further reduce the reliance on the grid and an ultra efficient heating system will provide heat on those rare days when the south facing glass is not sufficient to warm the home.
This project has received very favorable comments at the Santa Barbara County Board of Architectural Review and we are moving ahead to develop the design further. Next steps include structural engineering, grading plans and further refinement of the finishes and fixtures. Check back for more updates!
