The site was
...a tight hillside property above Santa Barbara with complex zoning, slope, and view corridor considerations—but also extraordinary views stretching from the mountains to the ocean and Channel Islands. The clients envisioned a modest home where the distinction between indoors and outdoors would nearly disappear.
We began by studying
... the site, its constraints, and how the home could best capture the expansive views while remaining sensitive to the hillside and surrounding neighborhood. The design evolved as three steel-clad volumes with punched openings, connected by a flat roof that defines the central living space and extends outward over the patio. The home is oriented toward the view, with large pocketing glass doors allowing the living room to open completely to the outdoor entertaining spaces and creating a natural flow between inside and out.
Today the once challenging
... hillside site has become a 3,000-square-foot, three-bedroom home designed around its remarkable setting. Architecture, landscape, and outdoor living come together to create a modest modern residence that feels open to the mountains, ocean, and islands beyond.
