The site was
…an original single-story tract home in Santa Barbara’s beachside Mesa neighborhood, defined by exposed framing, tongue-and-groove ceilings, and the relaxed character of a classic beach house. The owners wanted to add a primary suite and new living space without losing the simplicity and charm of the original home.
We began by studying
...how the addition could build on the home’s existing character while responding carefully to zoning, neighborhood privacy, and ocean views. Familiar elements from the original house—exposed posts, beams, and wood ceilings—were reinterpreted in a more modern architectural language.The new primary suite was designed with a roof that appears to float above exposed framing, allowing natural light to enter from multiple sides. Today, the original beach house
...has evolved into a light-filled modern home that feels connected to its past. New and existing architecture come together naturally, adding space and functionality while preserving the relaxed character that made the original house special.
